What's the Story?

In CAPTIVATING THE KING, the Qing invade and conquer the Joseon, demanding they cut ties with the Ming and declare the Qing as their ally. They also take the king's younger brother, Grand Prince Jinhan, hostage until the king produces an heir. When he returns, it's to a divided royal court fighting for control and rumors that he is now a Qing spy. All seems lost until the Grand Prince finds an ally in a mysterious woman, passing as a man, while hustling villagers in the board game of danuk.

Beautiful settings and costumes can't overcome a stilted and weak narrative in this historical drama. Set in the grandeur of a Chinese palace, Captivating the King aims to present a story rich in political intrigue but ends up offering an oversimplified and immature narrative. The show's reliance on stereotypical gender roles and its engagement with problematic themes further detract from its appeal, making it a weak watch for viewers seeking elevated intrigue in their historical dramas.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about stereotypes. As teens watch content that is more adult, they will take in more sexual, racial, and ethnic stereotypes. Be ready to talk about what teens are seeing. Ask (rather than tell) your kid what's problematic about stereotyped or demeaning representations. Encourage them to think about what's realistic and why particular portrayals may be harmful.

  • Call out and discuss representations that involve pressure/coercion to have sex, particularly if such behavior is presented as romantic and attractive. Ask (rather than tell) your teen why such content is problematic.
