What's the Story?

CASA GRANDE is a soapy neo-Western drama focused on a few different families in Northern California farmland. Some own the land, and others work it for them -- and the contrasts and conflicts are inherent in these varying ways of life. Wealthy farming magnate Sawyer Clarkman is hiding several secrets from his family, not the least of which is his involvement in anti-immigrant tactics that have a tragic ripple effect on not only the families that work for him, but also for his own children.

This soapy series characterizes itself as a drama centered on issues of class, wealth, and race. While Casa Grande does examine these, the tone has more in common with a typical nighttime soap than a prestige drama. This isn't a bad thing by any means, and the romantic entanglements and shady dealings among the families depicted in Casa Grande are as accessible a way to approach the topic as any. It's definitely refreshing to hear English and Spanish dialogue in a soap, and to see a cast that reflects the world we actually live in. The acting is serviceable and the plots are predictable, but with only five episodes, it's a perfectly decent weekend binge-watch.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the relationships between the farm workers and the rich landowners. Why does Hassie's family have an issue with her relationship with one of their workers? How do they justify their reasoning?

  • How does the way The Clarkmans treat their workers on the surface conflict with what they do behind their backs -- specifically in regard to the secret deal they've got with ICE? How do you see this hypocrisy play out in their relationships?
