What's the Story?
In CATALOG, Youssef (Mohamed Farrag), a high-powered but emotionally distant executive, is thrust into single fatherhood after the sudden loss of his wife, Amina (Reham Abdel Ghafour). Overwhelmed by the demands of raising their two young children, Youssef stumbles upon Amina's old YouTube channel: an archive of heartfelt parenting tutorials she recorded before her death. With help from his supportive but sometimes overbearing brother Hanafy (Khaled Kamal), Youssef begins to parent by proxy, following Amina's digital guidance one episode at a time. What begins as reluctant survival turns into a journey of reconnection, as Youssef learns how to become the father he never thought he could be.
Is It Any Good?
This formulaic family melodrama is anchored by Farrag's solid lead performance. His grounded portrayal of a widowed father fumbling through grief is Catalog's most valuable asset, expressing vulnerability, frustration, and tenderness without slipping into affectation. His scenes with the children and his brother offer consistent warmth, particularly during lively mealtime conversations.
But beyond that, Catalog struggles to bring anything new to the table. The "dead wife as moral compass" trope feels not only outdated but lazy—a woman's death once again deployed to facilitate a man's emotional growth. It might be forgivable if the show found a meaningful way to subvert this setup, but the story unfolds exactly how anyone would expect, with no pleasant surprises. Despite its good intentions, Catalog often feels as if it's running on autopilot with far too many moments that lull instead of engage.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Catalog's depictions of the emotional challenges of becoming a caregiver. How does the show explore the process of learning to take on that role later in life? And how do these challenges further manifest in non-traditional family units?
In what ways does the use of YouTube as a posthumous parenting guide reflect our growing reliance on digital legacy? How can we responsibly use these digital platforms for positive things like emotional and practical support?
How do the characters demonstrate compassion? Why is it an important character strength?
