What's the Story?
CHEAT is a British game show where contestants are allowed to cheat, but also have to guess who else is doing it. In the game hosted by Danny Dyer and Ellie Taylor, four players take turns answering trivia questions to bank some cash in a general pot. If a player gets an answer wrong, money is removed from the pot. To avoid this from happening, the player can secretly press a button to see the correct response before answering correctly. But after giving the right answer, the other players can indicate if they believe that cheating occurred. Depending on the round, money is deducted from the pot for each cheat, or added back when some cheaters are eliminated by the players who correctly sniff them out. The two players that make it to the final round face off until one of them is eliminated for incorrectly answering a question, incorrectly accusing the other player of deception, or because they got caught cheating. The winner will take home up to 50,000 pound sterling, which is close to $60K.
Is It Any Good?
The complicated and repetitive game show features contestants answering questions and attempting to correctly accuse other players of cheating to win some cash. Cheat has the potential to be entertaining, but the convoluted rules about when money is eliminated and added to the pot sometimes makes it more frustrating than fun. While the banter between the contestants can be humorous, hosts' quips often fall flat. The rounds feel unnecessarily prolonged, and by the end of each game chances are that you will be more excited about it being over than about seeing who wins the money.
