What's the Story?

In CLEAN SLATE, Harry (George Wallace), a stubborn but well-meaning car wash owner in Alabama, is shocked when his long-estranged child returns home after 23 years—now as Desiree (Laverne Cox), a confident Black trans woman. As they navigate their reunion, Harry struggles to reconcile his mindset with the reality of who his daughter has become. Meanwhile, Desiree faces the challenges of re-entering her hometown and finding acceptance in a community that has changed—but not entirely.

Is It Any Good?

This feel-good comedy radiates neighborly warmth—the kind of small-town, front-porch hospitality rarely seen on TV anymore. Set in Alabama, Clean Slate captures the everyday joys and struggles of Southern life, from the authentic home interiors to unexpected romances in unlikely places. And it expands the scope of modern Southern experience—a Black trans woman at the center, a diverse supporting cast, and lively elder characters.

But the emotional beats in Clean Slate could have been more layered. Harry and Desiree's motives for reconnecting remain unclear—a deeper dive into their shared grief over Desiree's late mother could have added weight. And the show sometimes relies on drawn-out dialogues to recount key moments instead of showing them, missing opportunities for richer storytelling. While easy to watch, it leaves you wishing for a bit more beneath all the Southern charm.
