What's the Story?
CRAP HAPPENS follows Toni (Anton Schneider), a struggling middle-aged rapper in Berlin who returns to his eccentric and tiny hometown after his mother's death. He unexpectedly discovers he has a teenage son (Sky Arndt). As Toni tries to revive his stalled music career while navigating fatherhood for the first time, he's forced to confront his past, his sense of failure, and what it means to belong. Blending dark humor with surreal moments, the story centers on Toni's messy attempts to grow up and reconnect, as he learns that creativity, responsibility, and honest relationships may be the only way forward.
Is It Any Good?
This German show is an odd watch. Crap Happens' use of super-saturated colors, camera angles, composition, and voice-over combined with on-screen text feel like a nod to Wes Anderson, yet the humor is crude and bizarre. (How bizarre? A main character is a talking, animatronic duckling named Tupac.) There are unconventional and meaningful themes about growth, but It's largely offbeat and edgy.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about handling mistakes and second chances. The main character makes poor choices but still tries to fix them, and takes responsibility even when it's hard. When did you or your family have to admit to making a mistake, and how did it go?
Talk about big emotions like grief and frustration. Crap Happens offers opportunities to discuss healthy ways to cope with loss, anger, and self-doubt, and how creative outlets (like music) can help.
Talk about how to build and repair relationships. Toni's evolving relationship with his son can open conversations about trust, honesty, and what it takes to strengthen family connections over time.
