A sitcom with a historical twist

Derry Girls will make you laugh, but it may also make you learn. It chronicles the lives of a group of girls (and a wee English fella) living in Northern Ireland during the Troubles of the 1990s. It's best to do some research before watching the show. Without reading a bit into the Northern Ireland conflict, the show is still funny, but the historical significance of some groups, such as the IRA, may go unnoticed.

Derry Girls is absolutely brilliant, absolutely hilarious and the show itself gets a 5 star rating from me, but I certainly would advise that only older teenagers from 15+ watch it. Despite other reviews it is not suitable from 11+ There is lots of sexual slang and innuendos in the show. I certainly wouldn’t let my 11 year old watch it.

But watch it WITH your kids......

This is hysterically funny and also (for US families who may not be familiar with "The Troubles") gives a historical perspective that is not taught in our public schools. Yes there is one character who is very rude and is overly interested in sexual topics -- and she talks about them graphically--but let's be honest here: if your kid attends public middle school there is nothing that they haven't heard outside of your house. We watch with the closed captions on because the accent and the vocabulary can be difficult to understand (in fact we go to the "Derry Girls" vocabulary lists that you can find on google to better understand what is being said!).
