What's the Story?
DESI BLING, a spinoff of the unscripted series Dubai Bling, features a group of rich and flamboyant Indian expats living the big life in Dubai. Indian actors and romantic partners Tejasswi Prakash and Karan Kundrra have chosen to make Dubai one of their principal residences, and know that they will be joining an exclusive group of extremely wealthy "Desis" (a reference used to describe people and culture that originate from the Indian subcontinent) with whom they want to fit in. Among them is Kundrra's self-made billionaire friend Satish Sanpal, who, along with his wife and businesswoman Tabinda, wants to help them create new business opportunities. The group also includes entrepreneur Dyuti Parruck and his wife, model and entrepreneur Iryna Kinakh; twins and businesswomen Alizey Mirza and Lailli Mirza; and former beauty queen and current UN peace ambassador Pamela Serena. Adding to the group are the Sajans, headed up by patriarch Rizwan Sajan, a self-made billionaire and founder of The Danube Group. Also making appearances are actor Tiger Schroff and vedic astrologer Jane Gaurr. From socializing and networking to gossiping incessantly about each other, Prakash and Kundrra are learning how to navigate this new community.
Is It Any Good?
This vapid series is mainly a collection of cringeworthy moments filled with barbed behavior, misogyny, and people delighting in the materialistic. Most of the Desi Bling cast doesn't hesitate to talk about or show off their wealth to the audience and to each other, but it's mainly the women who are portrayed as snide and spiteful. Despite the fact that most of the female cast is educated and professionally successful, male cast members often exhibit patriarchal attitudes intended to minimize who they are as business people, mothers, and wives. Some may also find it troubling that some of these women appear to acquiesce to their partners' sexist and patronizing expectations, especially given their involvement in women's advocacy initiatives. Granted, a lot of this seems like a manufactured attempt to increase the show's drama, but Desi Bling is so over the top that the potential for upsetting audiences is greater than its potential for entertaining them.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the term "Desi." Did you know that it comes from the Sanskrit word "desh," which means homeland? From what countries do Desi peopel come from?
Does Desi Bling represent all wealthy Indian communities in Dubai, or is it reinforcing a stereotype about them? Or is it simply designed to promote cast members and their businesses?
