What's the Story?

DIARY OF A DITCHED GIRL (the Swedish title Halva Malmö Bestar av Killar som Dumpat Mig translates as "Half of Malmö Is Full of Guys who Dumped Me") follows the dating lives of sisters Amanda and Adina, their divorced parents, and the girls' friend group. The predominant storyline is about how Amanda, who's been single for years, is ready to dive into love—or at least dive into dating. She fumbles her way through embarrassing, unsatisfying, and risky dating situations trying to learn her self-worth and what she wants in a partner. Will she succeed in finding love?

If you loved Fleabag or Sex and the City, you'll love this Swedish show. In Diary of a Ditched Girl, the sister and girlfriend relationships are well-written and reflect modern, loving female bonds. The parents are in their own selfish worlds, but rather than trying to change them, Amanda and Adina accept and love them as best they can. The parade of bad dates that Amanda goes on range from hilarious to cringey to waving so many red flags that it feels like a matador's supply warehouse. But the characters are vulnerable, raw, honest, and relatable. It's a great watch for adults in the dating pool, or anyone with friends who are dating. This feels like an instant rewatchable classic.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the supportive bonds that the girlfriends share. Often people will build their own "friend family" when their flesh and blood doesn't show up as needed. What are ways you show up for your friends, and how could you be a better friend in hard times as well as good?

  • Families can talk about the risks of online dating and dating in general. How do you think Amanda was smart about dating and what could she have done to project her heart, mind, and physical body? Was there anything you wanted to yell at the screen for her to hear?
