What's the Story?

DOCTOR ON THE EDGE follows Dr. Do Jiui (Lee Jae-wook, Dear Hongrang), a young doctor assigned to fulfill his three-year mandatory military service as a public health doctor on the remote island of Pyeondongdo. Feared by medical workers for its isolation, bugs, limited cuisine, and more, the assignment is a living nightmare for Jiui, who is secretly paralyzed by the idea of having to travel by boat. Alongside Nurse Yuk Hari (Shin Ye-eun), a mysterious woman who fled her own past in the city, Dr. Jiui must navigate a flood of bizarre local medical cases while trying to survive the island without letting his psychological wounds break him or falling in love, before the time comes to apply for a transfer.

The alternative military service on a remote island is an interesting twist on the medical show genre, and K-drama enthusiasts will likely enjoy the classic forced proximity tension between the two leads. Audiences of Doctor on the Edge might find the cast's initial personality traits grating, though. The dialogue is frequently hostile and the characters often act self-centered, dismissive, and outright rude to one another. In the end, the prickly dynamics may mean viewers won't stick around long enough to warm up to the cast and see the central love story through.

  • Families can talk about how the show features characters who are deeply anxious about getting scars because they're worried about how it will affect their looks. How does modern media pressure us to value our outward appearance over our inner character strengths? Discuss how to build self-worth around your actions and kindness rather than your looks.

  • How does Dr. Do Jiui try to hide his severe fear of the ocean? Do you think this causes him to lash out at others? Why do we sometimes act angry or rude to the people around us when we are actually just scared or overwhelmed? Talk about how recognizing the root cause of your feelings can change how you treat others.
