What's the Story?

In DRAGON STRIKER, farm boy Key Nagatatsu (voiced in English by Akshay Kumar) idolizes the Gorotama players at Kal Asterock school. In Gorotama, a sport similar to soccer, each player uses their unique tama (magical power) against their opponents. When Key discovers that he has a powerful dragon tama and that his deceased mother was a famous Gorotama player, he's delighted to accept a position at Kal Asterock school. He makes friends with Ssyelle (Rebecca LaChance), a fledgling Gorotama goalie with a "Clock Master" tama, and Milo (Yeukayi Ushe), whose tama allows him to squirt jelly blobs everywhere. Less happily, Key learns that the existing players on the Dragons (the team he hopes to play on) are terribly mean. He also receives a foreboding warning from the headmaster, who tells Key that if he doesn't learn to master his dragon tama, he may meet the same deadly fate as his mother. Can Key and his friends find their place in Kal Asterock and on the Gorotama pitch?

Is It Any Good?

Our review:
Parents say ( 1 ):
Kids say ( 2 ):

There's a lot to love in this sports fantasy anime: an incredibly rich fantasy world, cool magical powers, compelling characters, and lush music that sounds like a movie score. The Dragon Striker visual design is fantastic, and depicts a world that's a mashup of medieval Europe, feudal Japan, and some futuristic elements. While they do have tremendous magical powers, Key and his friends, with their feelings of imposter syndrome and desire to fit in, will still seem relatable to tweens. Grown-ups will appreciate that instead of typical anime fight scenes, the cool battle sequences are in the form of less-violent soccer matches. While there are some overarching themes like friendship and perseverance, the focus of this series is the enchanting fantasy world and dramatic sports action. Dragon Striker is an entertaining series that families can watch together.
