Common Sense Media Review
Spin-off's Texas drama is fine but flat; violence, language.

Dutton Ranch
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
When Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) lose their farm in Montana, they head south and start DUTTON RANCH in Rio Paloma, Texas. Soon enough, Beth and Rip become the smalltime underdogs to Rio Paloma's controlling family and its matriarch, Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening).
Is It Any Good?
In many ways, Yellowstone felt like a throwback to Western TV dramas of the 1950s and '60s—this solid but underwhelming spin-off is a great reminder of why they don't make 'em like that anymore. Dutton Ranch features two of Yellowstone's characters, the eternally cranky Beth Dutton and empty vessel Rip Wheeler, as they embark on a new startup in Texas. In the fictional Rio Paloma, characters casually wave guns around in front of police, and adult women fall for high school boys. Everything that could be interesting or dramatic gets portrayed as routine, while the supposedly important events feel equally mundane. That said, there are some positive messages about integrity and if you're a fan of this family of shows, it should satisfy that Taylor Sheridan itch.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about spin-offs. Did you watch Yellowstone? How is Dutton Ranch similar to the original series? How is it different? Do any of the themes from one carry over to the other?
What does the moral code seem to be in Rio Paloma? How do the Duttons and Jacksons operate within this morality? When do they break it? What values are important to Rip and Beth? How do they clash with the values of the Jackson family?
