What's the Story?

In DWIGHT IN SHINING ARMOR, Dwight is a highly involved high school student who accidentally falls through a hole in the forest floor while taking photos for a school club. He lands directly on Princess Greta, an ancient warrior princess who has been under a sleeping spell. The accidental kiss wakes her but binds them together: if Greta dies, Dwight dies too. Now, Dwight must navigate a world of magic and ancient rivalries while Greta tries to adjust to the modern world.

Aimed squarely at elementary-aged children, the show relies heavily on fish-out-of-water comedy. While the production value for the villains and fight scenes is relatively low in Dwight in Shining Armor, and the writing isn't particularly sophisticated, the lead actors carry the show well. Dwight has good comedic timing, and Princess Greta maintains a strong, commanding screen presence. The protagonist's commitment to a message of diplomacy over violence and the strong female lead makes it a refreshing alternative to more traditional action shows.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • While watching Dwight in Shining Armor you can talk about Dwight saying he "doesn't do brute force" and prefers diplomacy. Why is talking through a problem better than getting into a physical or verbal fight? Talk about how using words to find a middle ground often leads to a better long-term solution than just winning a fight.

  • Dwight falls into a situation he didn't plan for but stays true to himself. How do you keep your own values when you are in a new group or a strange situation? Use this to talk about peer pressure and the importance of knowing what you stand for before you get into a tricky spot.

  • Talk to your kids about why it's not OK for Dwight to kiss Greta, or for Chlodwig to try to marry her, without her consent. Discuss the concept and importance of consent.
