What's the Story?
In EARTH MOODS, aerial shots of different landscapes and natural phenomena are accompanied by gentle music. The icy water flows into fields of undulating snow. Layers of white rock ring sandstone buttes. Waterfalls, streams, tracts of green forest-- all arrayed and slowly undulate as benign music plays. Each 30-minute episode explores a different ecosystem. Like flying in a plane over beautiful vistas, the views are mesmerizing and soothing. There's no plot, no drama, just an experience of viewing far-flung natural scenery on a screen at home.
Is It Any Good?
Visually stunning views of the planet make for mellow a viewing experience. In Earth Moods, National Geographic filmmakers capture different ecosystems, focusing on the geography and topography, rather than the living beings who make their homes there. It's as if the viewer is invited to be a voyeur, not a visitor.
Families might not be enticed to sit together to watch this series because there's not much engagement. Rather, these episodes serve as reminders that we live in a miraculous place called Earth, with dramatic vistas and stunning beauty. In a world where there's overstimulation, this series seeks to soothe. After a long work day, or after studying for a string of exams, checking in on a tropical island from the comfort of the family room might feel just right.
