What's the Story?

EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION, a reboot of the unscripted series that ran from 2003 to 2020, features families being gifted new homes or major home remodels with the help of their communities. Led by Get Organized with the Home Edit's hosts Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin, each episode features a family that gives back to the community, but that is facing unique challenges or struggling with major life changes. With the help of carpenter and Survivor's 36th-season winner, Wendell Holland, and interior designer Arianne Bellizaire, a new space or home is designed for their specific needs. While Wendell, Arianne, and volunteers focus on the construction and design process, Clea and Joanna work with the family to downsize and develop organizational systems based on Home Edit "zones" that will help the household run more efficiently and happily. At the end of a long five days, the family's new or improved digs are revealed.

Is It Any Good?

The unscripted series offers the emotional family stories that the original series is known for, but the process focuses more on the family's stories and individual needs more than the overall build. Furthermore, a fair amount of time is dedicated to the process of decluttering and organizing, which is a key part of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. In some cases it's even characterized as part of a homeowner's healing process. Granted, like the original series this reboot is very formulaic, and there's lots of obvious logo placement and references to companies and show sponsors, including Clea Shearer and Joanna Teplin's lifestyle brand. But if you can get past this, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition offers a positive viewing experience that focuses more on heart than house.
