Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
FAMILIES LIKE OURS is a Danish drama about rising sea levels causing Denmark to execute a mass deportation in order to save its citizens. Teen high school student, Laura, is torn between wanting to relocate with either one of her divorced parents, or her new high school crush. The series follows various family members on their journeys out of Denmark and into their new chapter as refugees looking for work and shelter in nearby countries.
Is It Any Good?
Characters in this series are challenging to connect with. While Families Like Ours' storyline has potential to be compelling, its dialogue and actIng are too over-the-top to be a standard drama, but not over-the-top enough to be considered camp. In times of extreme stress, parents abandon children and teens pair off with fleeting crushes. There's a young, semi-psychic child with an under-developed storyline who serves as a bridge from one plot-line to the next. The deportation plan is so unorganized and feels very un-Danish. Should viewers manage to make it to the end of the series, they'll witness a wedding designed to warm hearts after many episodes of strife. However, for lovers of Nordic-noir, this was a "nej tak" -- "no, thanks."
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about their own personal game plan for whatever natural disaster could happen in their area. Whether it's a fire, or earthquake, flood or storm, having a clear action plan and knowing how you are prepared can bring ease to all members of your family.
The coping mechanisms within Families Like Ours were all extreme. When you and your family experience stress, what do you tend to do? Are your external with your feelings? Shouting or breaking things? Or do you turn inward and isolate? How can you get better at asking for help, and are there any ways that stress could be better managed?
When you and your family watch natural disaster movies, what is your family take-away? Do you consider the climate change elements? How the government officials handle things? The actions of the citizens? What storyline resonates with you and why?
