Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist
What's the Story?
Set in Atlanta in 1970, Fight Night retells the story of an infamous armed robbery that took place during a Muhammad Ali fight. Small-time bookie Chicken Man (Kevin Hart, Jumanji) gets involved with organized crime in order to provide a better life for his family, but quickly gets in over his head.
Is It Any Good?
Between the intriguing premise and the incredible cast, a crime drama centered around a Muhammad Ali fight has all the elements for a knockout series. But Fight Night never really seems to know what to do with all of its ideas and talent besides dress them in 70s outfits and hairstyles. Adapted from a podcast, the series seems to put little effort into figuring out how to build suspense or drama in an actual TV show. Instead, all the effort goes into the surface stuff, using the visual language of blaxploitation in a way that doesn't ever really land. It's interesting that a series about Ali, for whom style and substance were fascinatingly intertwined, would so blatantly choose one over the other.
