Final Draft
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
FINAL DRAFT is an eight-part Japanese competition featuring mostly retired athletes competing for cash to invest in a second career. Twenty-five male and female athletes in their late 20s to early 40s face off in a series of grueling physical and mental challenges designed to test their strength, agility, endurance, judgment, and stamina. They come from a wide range of individual and team sports, and each has something to prove to themselves by competing. Some are former professional athletes who retired at the top of their game and want to show that they are still elite competitors, while others whose careers ended early (due to a variety of circumstances) feel like they want to resolve unfinished business. Meanwhile, a few contestants simply cannot make a living playing their sport full time. Regardless of their reasons for playing, they're all vying for the 30 million Japanese yen (roughly $202,000) cash prize to help them find a new passion and build a new life.
Is It Any Good?
The fun, energetic, and binge-worthy series offers viewers lots of competitive excitement as participants join strenuous competitions that push their bodies and minds to the limit. While it may sound lopsided to pit folks like women's wrestling Olympic gold medalist Eri Tosaka, World Champion boxer Hozumi Hasegawa, and national baseball icon Yoshio Itoi against athletes who were not as successful in their careers, the diversity of sport, age, and experience among them evens the playing field. It also leads to lots of great contests and unexpected moments, made more entertaining by the cliffhangers at the end of each episode. But what also makes Final Draft compelling are the earnest conversations about what happens to athletes after their careers are over, and how difficult it is for many of them to reimagine or manage their lives once they stop competing. Overall, if you like a good challenge series, you don't have to like sports or be familiar with the participants to enjoy this one.

Most of the athletes on Final Draft are men. Why? Do most sports-themed challenges in the United States feature more women?
