Florida Man
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Florida Man stars Édgar Ramírez as Mike Valentine, an ex-cop and recovering gambling addict who has taken up working for his old bookie, Moss, to erase a debt. When Moss's girlfriend Delly leaves him, he sends Mike to track her down -- which takes him all the way back to his hometown in The Sunshine State. Finding Delly proves trickier than expected, and lands Mike in the middle of a race to find a hidden cache of gold bullion.
Is It Any Good?
This series is a perfect example of real life often proving funnier than anything a writer's room could come up with. Florida Man takes its name from a meme, the idea that whenever an absurd and horrific news story makes the rounds it most likely happened to a guy from Florida. Early on in the series, Mike, the central character, goes viral after a shark attacks his groin area. The attack has basically no effect on the plot or Mike's life, and joke falls flat and feels desperate, as do most of the other comedic set pieces the series tries. The lighter tone is what's supposed to set Florida Man apart from dozens of other streaming crime series, but instead it's a fairly generic potboiler.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the story. Are you rooting for Mike Valentine? What do you hope he accomplishes? What stands in his way?
What are some moral or ethical decisions that Mike has to make? How does he make those decisions? What seems to motivate him?
Where does the title Florida Man come from? Does it reflect the theme of the series? If so, how?
