What's the Story?

GOING DUTCH is a comedy series about a battle-loving U.S. Army colonel being stationed at the least important U.S. Army base in the world. After being recorded insulting the top brass, Colonel Patrick Quinn (Denis Leary) is sent to command U.S.A.G. Stroopdorf, a base with no military purpose that's located in the Netherlands. When he and his assistant Major Abraham Shah (Danny Pudi) arrive, they find an undisciplined company of soldiers being headed up by interim commander Captain Maggie Quinn (Taylor Misiak), who happens to be Colonel Quinn's estranged daughter. Soon he realizes that he's going to have to learn to work with his daughter productively in order to successfully establish some sort of military order at the base, and to rebuild their relationship.

This situation comedy offers some lighthearted fun thanks to quick banter and physical gags. While the antics of Going Dutch's soldiers, including Sergeant Dana Conway (Laci Mosley) and Corporal Papadakis (Hal Cumpston) create some humorous moments, there are some standout verbal exchanges that will elicit a few chuckles. It successfully weaves together a story of how a military base evolves with a story about a father and daughter who inevitably grow closer as they rebuild their personal relationship. Granted, there are some silly moments, which often rely on a few broad stereotypes. But the overall cast is likable, and the stories are just believable enough for audiences to remain engaged, which makes Going Dutch entertaining.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about whether U.S. bases with no military purpose really exist. If so, what is their purpose?

  • Did you know that Going Dutch is actually produced at a military base in Ireland? And that the base's name, Stroopdorf, is actually German instead of Dutch? Why?
