Golden SixTones
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
The Japanese variety series GOLDEN SIXTONES features the members of the Japanese boy band known as the SixTones (pronounced stones) as they talk, play games, and compete in fun challenges with special guest stars. Yugo Kochi, Taiga Kyomoto, Juri Tanaka, Hokuto Matsumura, Jesse, and Shintaro Morimoto sang together as a boy band-in-training. But after making their formal debut in 2020, they've sold millions of albums and are considered J-pop idols. Now the SixTones get a chance to interact with popular celebrities like Shido Nakamura, Tori Matsuzaka, and Yo Oizumi and have a little fun.
Is It Any Good?
Western viewers unfamiliar with the rich history of Japanese celebrity variety shows may find this one over the top, but it's an example of how the genre has evolved and kept pace with Japan's social trends. While the Golden SixTones band members use the opportunity show off their personalities and hidden talents to an international viewing audience, they engage "tarento" (celebrities) with the traditional lighthearted talk, games, and contests ranging from "dynamic visual acuity checks" to ramen noodle cooking competitions. Unlike on some popular Japanese TV shows, the challenges featured here aren't mean or painful, and the ribbing between the band members and guests is more comical than insulting. If you like the SixTones, or enjoy traditional Japanese entertainment, you'll have fun tuning in.
