Hope Valley: 1874
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
HOPE VALLEY: 1874, a dramatic prequel to When Calls the Heart, is a pioneer story about a woman settling in Canada's Northwest frontier to restart her life. Widow Rebecca Clarke (Bethany Joy Lenz) is on her way to Canadian gold country with her daughter Sarah (Mila Morgan) to take ownership of a boarding house she purchased site unseen. When her wagon breaks down by a settlement roughly fifteen miles away from their destination, local rancher Tom Moore (Benjamin Ayres) lends her a helping hand. A bachelor who dislikes gold mining, Moore insists on warning Rebecca about the dangers posed by the miners, which is hardly reassuring when she realizes that her plans may not unfold as she expected. Nonetheless, Tom Moore respects her gumption, and they both agree that there are more good people than bad who live in the area, like Hattie Quinn (Jill Hennessey), the local trade post owner, along with her daughter Olivia (Roan Curtis) and Nash and Peggy McCabe (Brad Abramenk and Chelsea Hobbs, respectively) who work on Moore's ranch. Meanwhile, Constable Alexander Vaughn (Lachlan Quarmby), a member of the newly formed Northwest Mounted Police Force, is assigned to keep order in the area.
Is It Any Good?
Inspired by Janette Oke's novels, this family-friendly, faith-based series explores the origins of Hope Valley thirty-six years before When Calls the Heart's story begins. Like its parent series, Hope Valley: 1874 offers messages about family, community, perseverance, and hope. However, it doesn't feature any of the WCTH characters or their descendants. Instead, it's a somewhat sanitized pioneer chronicle about the events that took place on the same Canadian land during the gold rush nearly four decades prior. It also offers lots of strong female characters and a slow-burning romance that's fun to follow. If you're a fan of the When Calls the Heart franchise, there's a good chance you'll enjoy what this prequel has to offer.
