A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this TV show.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that ID-0 is an anime series that features some fantasy violence (explosions, weapon fire), and some content that some may consider sexual (female robots have breasts, a character in her underwear). The main female character is smart but has a tendency to be timid, and at times, naive. Words like "idiot" are used, and fictitious brand logos are visible on uniforms and equipment. It raises questions about ethical human behavior, but some of this will go over younger tweens' heads.

What's the Story?
ID-0 is an anime series about a young cosmogeology student who finds herself unexpectedly trying to clear her name. It's 89 F.D., and humans are using orichalt, an unstable mineral that can manipulate time and space, to enable them to travel beyond the solar system. To mine it, they've developed I-Machines, into which a person's consciousness is inserted in order to work in the extreme environments. But when Maya Mikuri, a smart but timid Planet Alliance Academy scholarship student, goes on her first faculty-led dig, an accident leaves her without her body. Rescued by a band of mining pirates known as the Excavate Company, she now finds herself surrounded by a crew largely made up of Evertrancers: people whose consciousness permanently resides within their I-Machine. Getting back to her body and her school is proving difficult, since the Excavate crew doesn't want to get caught by the Planet Federation, and Maya stands accused of illegal data sharing.
Is It Any Good?
This fun anime series features space-age robots, a cast of complex characters, and compelling action sequences. While it has a pretty easy-to-understand plot (not always a trait of anime stories), there are enough twists and turns to keep it engaging.
Despite the simple storyline, ID-0's narrative contains some larger questions about what it means to be human, and how humanity is defined. These questions are meaningful, but much of this will fly over younger viewers' heads. Teens and tweens should be able to appreciate the depth of the series while still enjoying the adventures.
