Imperfect Women
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Eleanor (Kerry Washington), Nancy (Kate Mara), and Mary (Elisabeth Moss) have been best friends since college, and in the decades since they've developed into IMPERFECT WOMEN. Nancy married Robert (Joel Kinnaman) and ascended to a level of wealth that allowed her to sit on charity boards for the ballet and art museum instead of holding a paycheck job; her life might be perfect if her relationship with Robert and her adult daughter, Cora (Audrey Zahn), wasn't so stormy. Mary became a stay-at-home mom with her overbearing husband Howard (Corey Stoll) keeping an eye on her and her mothering. And Eleanor runs a worldwide conglomerate of hunger relief organizations and has remained resolutely single (but hardly lonely). The women have been there for each other through thick and thin, for decades. But when Nancy turns up dead in a park, those who knew her wonder: Did we ever really know her at all? This sophisticated whodunit was based on the book of the same name by Araminta Hall.
Is It Any Good?
Well-written and blessed with a five-star cast, this compelling drama brings to mind other female-forward ripped-from-the-novel adaptations like Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects. And that's not a bad thing: Like those other, lauded series, Imperfect Women doles out its revelations slowly and lives and dies on the secrets that longtime friends keep from each other. It also concerns a sudden violent death that sets a series of events into motion that brings light to things that have previously been kept in the dark.
Luckily, the powerhouse actors who anchor Imperfect Women are easily up to the task of keeping the twists of this soapy whodunit believable. Each appears at first to be a perfect example of a modern woman: Mary is the Earth mama tradwife, Nancy a moneyed perpetual nonprofit board member, Eleanor a business tycoon whose work with worldwide relief organizations has brought her both renown and wealth. But as the storytelling goes on and we get to know each character better, hidden betrayals, secrets, and lies emerge. Just as in the book, the series' perspective shifts from character to character and forward and backward in time, from the characters' first meeting in college up to their complicated three-way friendship as women in their 40s. It's a slow burn but a good one and is sure to be appreciated by viewers who enjoy watching as something obscure and mysterious slowly grows more and more clear.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about why serious TV dramas often revolve around murder investigations. Why are stories about murder such an enduring staple? What's interesting or compelling about unnatural deaths and crime investigations? Why do we enjoy watching these shows?
Elisabeth Moss and Kerry Washington, who play Mary and Eleanor in Imperfect Women, are also executive producers. What does an executive producer do? Is it typical that actors will produce movies or TV shows that they also star in? Pay attention to the credits in TV shows and movies you watch: Do you see stars' names on the list of producers?
Have you read the novel of the same name on which Imperfect Women was based? Is it necessary to have read the source material to appreciate an adaptation?
