What's the Story?
In IMPRACTICAL JOKERS: AFTER PARTY, former NSYNC singer Joey Fatone joins comedians Brian "Q" Quinn, James "Murr" Murray, Joe Gatto, and Sal Vulcano for a look back at previous episodes, with behind-the-scenes and bonus footage detailing what went right -- and wrong -- with their practical jokes. In the Impractical Jokers series, the four friends try to embarrass one another by creating situations that dance on the edge of credibility at times, with one member acting out and speaking the lines that the others are feeding him. The goal is to get a reaction or prank the public with outlandish conversations (like confusing the appropriate amount of alcohol to drink before driving), which leads to one of the cast members failing the challenge and having to participate in a final embarrassing stunt at the show's end.
Is It Any Good?
Props have to be given to the troupe for pulling off these stunts and doing a solid job of selling the joke, but while there are humorous moments, sometimes the whole bit just falls flat. Improvisation is the key to the show, and the ability to change direction on the fly keeps the spotlighted cast member (the one spouting the lines fed by the other three) on his toes throughout a segment. Unfortunately, some of the jokes aren't quite as funny as the other cast members would suggest with their raucous laughter. There are, however, bright spots of humor, and while the conversations tread that fine line between appropriate and inappropriate, between witty and juvenile humor, keep in mind that the whole point is to embarrass one member of the troupe.
What sets After Party apart from the original show is that the cast reveals set-ups, backgrounds to the jokes, and tidbits from members of the crew who explain how the jokes were helped along. As a behind-the-scenes look back at previous episodes and pranks, After Party can be seen as a "best of" for fans of the series.
