What's the Story?
IRREVERENT is an Australian series about an American criminal who goes into hiding by posing as a church reverend in a small Queensland reef town. When a Chicago rendezvous between rival crime families goes bad, organized crime mediator Paolo (Colin Donnell) finds himself on the run with stolen cash and the target of a mob hit. On a flight to Australia he finds himself sitting next to Reverend Mack Boyd (P.J. Byrne), who is on his way to take over the parish of the remote town of Clump, Far North Queensland. But Boyd, who is reeling from being dumped by his wife, disappears with the stolen money to start a new life, and Paolo finds himself living covertly as Clump's spiritual leader while trying to find him.
Is It Any Good?
This dark comedy combines silly storylines and interesting characters to create a series that is both familiar and compelling. Paolo is the proverbial fish-out-of-water, and struggles to understand the religious duties associated with his cover, and to adjust to the cultural norms of his new community. And, of course, as he negotiates these things, the mob is ever closer to finding him.
But what makes Irreverent worth watching are the residents of Clump, who are comprised of an eclectic cast of characters ranging from the local by-the-book police officer (played by Kylie Bracknell) to young friends Cameron (Ed Oxenbould) and Daisy (Tegan Stimson), the latter who quickly becomes Paolo's guide. Also fun is the (former) Reverend Boyd, with whom Paolo manages to connect with from time to time. Granted, the moments featuring regional humor may not be fully understood or appreciated by some viewers. Nonetheless, it's a series that offers plenty of entertaining moments that can be universally appreciated.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the cultural differences between people from Australia and those living in the United States. What are some of them? How are those differences reflected in the media each country produces?
What message does Irreverent send about community? How are we supposed to feel about Paolo being a part of the Clump community, given that he is lying about his identity?
