What's the Story?

JOHN LEGUIZAMO'S LATIN HISTORY FOR MORONS is a live comedy special that chronicles actor John Leguizamo's quest to find a Latino hero in American history for his son. He hops through 3,000 years of history to bring to life characters from the Mayans and the Spanish conquest to Cuban singer Pitbull.

Our review:

Kids say : Not yet rated

Despite John Leguizamo's versatile performance, Latin History for Morons is a show that does not dig deep and far from offering another look at Hispanic heritage, it reinforces the negative stereotypes associated with Latinos. The stories are told from a perspective of victimization in the face of anti-immigrant rhetoric. The show resorts to easy joke formulas in which most of the staged characters are caricatured as inept, ridiculous or abusive, especially other ethnic groups.

While it is true that some passages shed light on the little-known contributions of Latinos and pre-Hispanic cultures such as the Mayans' knowledge of 0 before Europe, the gaps in the narrative, historical inaccuracies and mistakes cannot be ignored.
