Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat
What's the Story?
In 2023, hoax reality show Jury Duty scored with a wild premise: Stage a fake jury trial staffed with actors, and one unknowing nobody who thinks it's all for real. The heartwarming, mildly surreal show was a hit, and now the original's creators and writers are back with a new edition lampooning corporate offsites in JURY DUTY PRESENTS: COMPANY RETREAT. This time, everyguy Anthony Norman thinks he's working as a temp at Rockin' Grandma's hot sauce company as an assistant to HR manager Kevin (Ryan Perez), and on tap to help Rockin' Grandma's corporate retreat go smoothly. But we know better, don't we?
Is It Any Good?
The central Jury Duty gimmick could easily skew mean, so it's a relief to see that the followup season is just as sweet and weird as the original. Viewers fell in love with season 1's Truman Show-esque stooge, and it's immediately clear that Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat has hooked itself another winner: Anthony is a kindhearted guy with a ready smile who oozes both positivity and a healthy sense of irony, both of which are on display from Company Retreat's first episode. Told that this year's Rockin' Grandma's retreat has extra emotional weight because CEO Doug is retiring and leaving the company in the hands of his son Dougie, Anthony is all-in with the support. "I'm really just here to do whatever they need," he says agreeably, quickly getting in the swing of things with his co-workers, especially Dougie, whom he bonds with early. Other Rockin' Grandma's personnel find Dougie a littleā¦manchild-y, but Anthony sees that Dougie just doesn't want to let his dad down.
Anthony gamesly hangs in there, despite a retreat that features a failed proposal, a robbery, a potential takeover from a private equity firm, and the "Dougcathelon," a day of absurd physical trials. The cast of characters surrounding Anthony also makes Company Retreat easy to love, chief amongst them Marc-Sully Saint-Fleur as easily excitable receptionist PJ and Blair Beeken as Marjorie, the way-too-committed manager of the campground where Rockin' Grandma's is spending their week. Company Retreat goes down a treat; may the future unknowing centerpieces of (hopefully!) forthcoming seasons never see it.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the premise of Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat. Is it mean to make just one person think they're having a real experience when they're actually on a TV show? How would you feel if you were Anthony?
Are there any behaviors or moments in Jury Duty Presents: Company Retreat that should have made it obvious to Anthony Norman that the retreat wasn't real? Do you think a group of actors could pull this type of prank again after this has streamed?
What is the appeal of a show like this? Why are we attracted to watching a person who doesn't really know how they're being watched? Is our interest in doing this a positive or a negative thing?
