What's the Story?

KEVIN (voiced by Jason Schwarzman) is a cute, coddled tuxedo housecat adjusting to big changes after his owners Dana (Aubrey Plaza) and Dan (Mike Mitchell) break up. Balking at the idea of moving out with Dana—he doesn't see himself as something to be "owned" and is firmly against microchipping—he seeks refuge in a chaotic animal rescue in Queens. While bunking with a weirdo hairless cat (Whoopi Goldberg) and high-strung Shih Tzu (Amy Sedaris), Kevin tries exploring the city around him and learning what it's like to live a people-free life.

Emulating Bojack Horseman's "foul-mouthed cartoon animals drinking heavily and doing sex stuff" formula isn't enough to make a good animated series—actual storytelling matters, too. Kevin's voice cast is absolutely stellar, a who's who of unexpected and fun actors, but they're completely wasted in episode after episode of repetitive jokes about prolapsed anuses and F-bomb-laden screaming. The flat, personality-free visual style does nothing to distract from the lack of a compelling narrative, and by the time the series wraps up with some marginally better moments here and there, you may be too bored to care.
