What's the Story?

KIBAOH KLASHERS centers on a young beetle, Dylan, being raised in the countryside by his grandfather, where it's just the two of them struggling to keep the family tea farm afloat. When a city bug -- who happens to be a professional "battle-blade" driver -- stumbles upon the farm one day and challenges him to a race, Dylan soon learns that all those years of tractor-driving may have given him the skills to compete in the big leagues. But how will he manage this without disappointing the grandfather who depends on him?

Is It Any Good?

The character design looks cheap and generic, the battle-blading talk gets needlessly technical at times (do kids need multiple speeches about transmissions?), and it's not particularly funny. There are some classic themes at play in Kibaoh Klashers, like the conflict between new and old, embracing one's destiny, and loyalty among family and friends. But it all gets sort of lost among the grating voice work and noisy visuals. Battle-blading is essentially a cross between drag racing and a demolition derby, which means there are many scenes of beetles menacing one another with their blade-equipped cars, which will excite some kids while potentially frightening others. As with the characters' vehicles, your mileage may vary.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about Dylan's unique family structure. Can you think of other shows and movies depicting close relationships between kids being raised by older family members?

  • Kibaoh Klashers focuses a lot on the idea of destiny. Is there an activity or hobby you feel might be your destiny? Can one's destiny ever be changed?
