Krapopolis
What's the Story?
Krapopolis is the name of a fledgling city in Ancient Greece, founded by the new king Tyrannis (Richard Ayoade). Tyrannis lives with his mother, the goddess Deliria (Hannah Waddingham), as well as his centaur father, warrior half-sister, and mermaid scientist half-brother. Together, the family must figure out how to lead its people while fending off threats from other tribes, gods, and mythical creatures.
Is It Any Good?
Initially conceived as an interactive series with an NFT tie-in, it's a minor miracle that this series ever actually got made. Along the way, Krapopolis evolved from its initial concept into a much simpler, more straightforward adult animated comedy. The problem is that the creators haven't done much to replace the wildly ambitious idea that was supposed to be the show's engine. The genre-bending humor that has defined creator Dan Harmon's best shows (Community, Rick and Morty) is completely absent. For a series set in ancient Greece, it's an awful lot like every other contemporary animated comedy.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how familiar you are with ancient Greece. What are some unique features of that time? How does Krapopolis play with history for its plots and jokes?
What motivates each of the characters? How do those motivations affect the choices they make throughout the series? Who are you rooting for? Who are you rooting against?
Why is Tyrannis attempting to start a "civilization"? How does he go about it? What obstacles does he face?
