La Liberación
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
LA LIBERACIÓN follows three professional women Carmen (Ilse Salas), Sol (Johanna Murillo), and Natalia (Cassandra Ciangherotti) as they come together to stop a sexual abuse scandal from going public. Their morally problematic mission leads them to confront their own demons in the entertainment industry's patriarchal system and cross paths with feminist group "La Aldea" tied to witches from the medieval times. From here, the present blends with the past, and the women embark on dark adventures beyond their imagination.
Is It Any Good?
The show deserves praise and attention for its boldness and originality. With its mix of cynical social commentary and magical witchcraft elements, La Liberación engages the audience with complexities of surviving sexual assault and navigating an abusive system. This melodrama has woozy time jumps and gritty lead performances; the lead trio of women are fearless, no-nonsense, and unafraid to be unpleasant but eventually there for each other.
Its unapologetically feminine motifs including period pads and gynecological exams make thought-provoking metaphors of the realities modern women experience every day. But this approach to advocating for women might not appeal to everyone, and the show loses its rhythm as it has so much to say in so little time. Because of its mysterious ways of unfolding the narrative, younger views will need guidance on how to interpret La Liberación's mixed messages.
