What's the Story?

Esteban Osuna (Gael García Bernal) is also known as LA MÁQUINA, a decorated boxer who's fighting way past his prime. When he loses a match to a younger opponent, Esteban faces haunting hallucinations from his dark past that could signify a brain injury. Esteban ponders retirement and freedom as Andy (Diego Luna) scores Esteban a rematch with a little bribery. Esteban wins, reclaiming his title, and feels that dating and junk food are finally within reach. But when Andy is contacted to get Esteban to fight one more match — the match of a lifetime — Esteban is pulled back into a world he's fighting to get away from. Meanwhile, someone knows how Andy scored La Máquina's rematch, and it costs more than what he bargained for.

This show pulls no punches when it comes to showing the chaos and corruption that erupts outside of the ring. La Máquina is thrilling and intense. The camaraderie and chemistry between Bernal and Luna is electric yet fragile. The language, sexual content, drug use, and violence make this suitable for older teens only.
