What's the Story?

LAID follows Ruby (Stephanie Hsu), a 33-year-old event planner as she realizes a morbid phenomenon: Her exes and/or former sexual partners are mysteriously dying one by one. This unsettling pattern compels her to investigate what's really going on. With the help of her witty and loyal best friend, AJ (Zosia Mamet), Ruby embarks on a mortifying journey to warn her remaining exes and unravel the mystery behind the deaths. Along the way, the duo encounter eccentric characters, awkward confrontations, and moments of emotional reckoning.

This daring romcom is like no other, and also isn't for everyone. Laid defies genre conventions and creates an original female lead who's deeply flawed but exciting and engaging to watch. The series' tricky and controversial premise wouldn't work so well if not for Hsu's wide emotional range, from struggles with conflicted feelings to brave embraces of identities and regrets.

For its ensemble cast that presents a wide variety of characters with diverse personalities, the script pays attention to making every one of them unique and relatable. It also rings true to the complexities and challenges of modern dating, and will make audiences reflect on their own morals and life choices. But younger viewers will need guidance or ability to distinguish right from wrong in the characters' dramatic actions.
