What's the Story?

LAND OF TANABATA follows Yoji Minamimaru (Kanata Hosoda), a college student who has telekinetic abilities and no plan for his future. He finds out he's a distant relative of his professor Masami Murakami (played by Hiroshi Mikami). When Murakami goes missing during Yoji's senior year of college, Yoji, Murakami's colleague Sayuri Emi (played by Mai Kiryu), and two of his friends travel to the town that Yoji and Murakami's ancient ancestors are from to find him. When they arrive, they're enthusiastically welcomed by the town council, but as the Tanabata festival begins, things start to feel suspicious and dangerous as they get closer to the truth of what happened to Murakami.

Our review:

This show is slow-moving, confusing, and overloads the viewer with too much information at once. Land of Tanabata has a lot of ancient history being explained constantly, while neglecting to explain the relevance of Yoji's character to the story. Viewers can quickly understand that he will be important to the plot, as he's the descendant of ancient figures with supernatural powers, but the creators take a long time explaining how he will be useful to the story line. The suspenseful parts are interesting, but few and far between. The creators of the show added so much violence that it feels overdone and irrelevant to the actual story. It could have been a very interesting show if the history and the violence were condensed.
