What's the Story?
LOVE OVERBOARD is an unscripted dating competition featuring contestants looking for love on a boat while risking being thrown out to sea. Gabby Windey hosts 16 singles who arrive at a luxury super yacht floating around Malta in hopes of finding a romantic connection and winning a $100K trip. The catch? Only four couples get to live on the top deck as "Topsiders" and enjoy all the extravagance that comes with it, while the singles live as "Downsiders" and serve as the crew. Throughout the experience, the contestants play games and compete in challenges to win dates and other opportunities designed to help them connect with potential partners. This is important, since the only way for singles to become a Topsider is to break up an established couple and be part of a new love match. If a Downsiders who fail at the attempt, or simply remains single, risk being eliminated—then they walk a plank and falling 30 feet into the Mediterranean Sea.
Is It Any Good?
This messy series raises the stakes of dating drama by offering a glamorous prize to those who win at romance and the risk of being thrown overboard to those who don't. Like many competitions of this kind, Love Overboard is built on questionable values—the contestants below deck plot and scheme to do what they can to cause established couples to question their feelings for each other in hopes of hooking up and enjoying the yacht's amenities. Going after someone else's love interest is nothing new in reality dating shows, but Love Overboard makes it more interesting by forcing the Downsiders to balance work assignments while competing for the Topsiders' attention. However, the real guilty pleasure comes from watching contestants going overboard. Fans of Love Island will find it easy to binge and undeniably entertaining.
