What's the Story?

MARCIAL MACIEL: WOLF OF GOD was born in Mexico with an education that ended at third grade. Pulled out of seminary for sleeping with a classmate, he was then "homeschooled" by a powerful bishop uncle. With this help, at the age of 21, he began his religious career, recruiting young boys for his new congregation. He was ordained officially in 1944. He then studied in Spain at Comillas, a notable Jesuit institution, where he brought many students and began The Legion of Christ, a religious organization under which he committed many atrocities, including the sexual abuse of over 60 boys, fathering children as a priest, and abusing his own children. The docuseries follows his further rise to power using interviews and re-enactments.

The information presented in this series is almost too difficult to take, but it's told in a way that's watchable so that people can hear this necessary story. Marcial Maciel: Wolf of God is a painful reminder that powerful people who claim to do good can be evil underneath their facade of goodwill. It also highlights those who were willing to look the other way though they knew of Maciel's crimes; a common issue in many other Catholic Church abuse cases. Though Maciel was barely punished during his lifetime, this documentary seals his legacy as an utter villain.
