What's the Story?

From the producers of Formula 1: Drive to Survive and Full Swing comes MATCHROOM: THE GREATEST SHOWMEN, which follows British promoter Barry Hearn and his son Eddie as they decide what to do about their family business. Essex born and bred, Barry Hearn founded a sports event management and promotion business in 1982 with only 100 pound sterling. Today his company, Matchroom Sport, is worth billions thanks to successfully promoting and putting on snooker, dart, and boxing matches, and managing professional athletes like British Olympic boxing gold medalist Anthony Joshua and Ireland's five-time lightweight champion Katie Taylor. Eddie Hearn is deeply involved in the business as the head of the boxing division and CEO of its media arm, but Barry worries that he's too cocky and reactive, and lacking the thick skin necessary to oversee the entire enterprise. However, Eddie is sure that he's more than capable, and is planning to take their business to the next level, which requires them to be open to Saudi Arabian interests. Now he's got six months to prove to his father that he's got the chops to successfully take over and grow the business while preserving the Hearn legacy.

The mildly entertaining six-episode unscripted sports series follows Barry and Eddie Hearn revealing the thin line between their professional and personal relationship while they secure the company's future. Matchroom: The Greatest Showmen showcases some of the athletes and players being managed by the company, along with scenes from competitive matches and behind-the-scenes moments. There's a lot of focus on the business, too, and the attempts made to ensure its growth and future success. In the center of it all are Barry and Eddie, who have similar goals, but have different ideas about how to reach them. Stateside audiences may be familiar snooker or darts, but most of the show's energy comes from boxing thanks to Eddie's passion for the sport. Ultimately, Matchroom: The Greatest Showmen is a promotional vehicle for the Hearns and their company, but it still offers a revealing look at the professional sports industry and the people who manage and promote it.
