Mating Season
What's the Story?
From the creators of Big Mouth comes MATING SEASON, an adult animated comedy about a group of forest animals looking for partners in springtime. When Josh (Zach Woods) wakes up after oversleeping his hibernation cycle by two weeks, he discovers that his partner has taken up with another bear. Meanwhile, Fawn (June Diane Raphael) is mourning the loss of her mother by checking out older bucks while foxy friend Penelope (Sabrina Jalees) is convinced that she doesn't have game. Adding to the group is Ray (Nick Kroll), a raccoon who loves working the casual dating scene and giving bad advice. It's not always easy, but they all try to support each other during the highs and lows that coming with finding their better half.
Is It Any Good?
The absurd and irreverent comedy features lots of off-beat and crude humor as a group of anthropomorphic animals navigate springtime coupling. Some of the humor comes from the obvious nods to the trials of human dating, ranging from being dumped to using dating sites. Featured guest stars like Ana Gasteyer and Lena Waithe also add to the fray. However, Mating Season relies heavily on crudely hypersexualizing animal mating rituals to get a laugh, but lacks the sharp writing necessary to keep it from becoming a running gag that consistently falls flat. Folks who like this sort of thing may enjoy it, but others may find Mating Season tiresome.
