Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
MATTHEW PERRY: A HOLLYWOOD TRAGEDY is a documentary that reviews the circumstances surrounding actor Matthew Perry's death. On October 28, 2023, the Friends star was found dead at his home by his assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa. Weeks later it was revealed that Perry had died from an acute ketamine overdose, which led to the arrest of Iwamasa, doctors, and local drug traffickers for collectively causing his death. Tabloid journalists like Katy Forrester and Deborah Walker, and a few of Perry's former co-stars and friends like Morgan Fairchild, Hank Azaria, and Jennifer Aniston (the latter two from archive footage) offer their thoughts about Perry and his long struggle with addiction. Authors like former LAPD Detective Greg Kading, along with Martin Estrada, a U.S. Attorney for the State of California Central District, discuss how the vulnerable actor was preyed upon by a Hollywood drug ring, and what the legal ramifications are for doing so. Television and audio recordings of interviews with Perry, his family, and some of the media coverage about his death are also featured.
Is It Any Good?
The sensational true crime documentary delves into Matthew Perry's death and exposes those responsible for supplying him with a controlled substance that ultimately ended his life. Relying heavily on the book Perry wrote, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, it offers some compassionate discussion of Perry's nearly life-long struggles with mental illness and addiction, and his failed efforts to overcome them. Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy also highlights how his addictive personality made him easy prey for local drug trafficker Jasveen Sangha (aka "Ketamine Queen") and distributors like Dr. Salvador Plasencia, both of whom, according to court records, admitted to supplying him with ketamine for a major overcharge. It's a sad and troubling story, but Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy doesn't offer a lot of new details about what happened, and the majority of those featured on the series are not associated with Perry or his case outside of talking or writing about it. As a result, it isn't particularly informative as true crime series go, and mostly serves as tabloid entertainment.
