What's the Story?
MERPEOPLE follows the industry of underwater performance art, and more specifically, mermaiding. Across the U.S. performers train in dangerous conditions, spend thousands of dollars on equipment, and try to get noticed by the big fish in the community. Original mermaids, dating back to the 1960s, are interviewed and discuss the history of their craft. The ups and downs of a few ambitious performers are followed as they try to make their dream a reality in murky waters.
Is It Any Good?
Though overly dramatic at times, this series presents a niche community in an intriguing way. MerPeople is vulnerable, informational, and uplifting. It covers the history of mermaiding, interviewing mermaid legends as they interact with up-and-coming performers. Aside from the strong language, this series is suitable for most ages.
