What's the Story?

Inspired by the award-winning documentary Familia de medianoche, MIDNIGHT FAMILY is a Mexican medical drama that centers on a talented medical student who works nights in her family's private ambulance. Marigaby Tamayo (Renata Vaca) is going to school in hopes of earning her medical degree, but she isn't doing as well as she should be because she's secretly working with her father Ramón (Joaquín Cosio) and her brothers Marcus (Diego Calva) and young Julito (Sergio Bautista) in the family business, which happens to be a private ambulance service. The university forbids its medical students from working in any aspect of the field prior to graduating, but the competition between hospital and privately owned ambulances for clients is fierce, and Ramón's business isn't doing very well. His health isn't what it used to be, either, and they have no medical insurance. It's not an easy life, and Marcus thinks that it is no longer viable, while Julito, in his innocence, just wants to protect his dad. But Marigaby knows that if she wants to reach her goals, she's going to have to make it all work.

This sometimes-soapy medical series tells the story of an ambitious woman who is trying to reach her goals while negotiating the expectations of medical school, her family, and her own desires. In Midnight Family, she must navigate between these worlds, while also dealing with relationships, including lovers like Raul (José María de Tavira), a doctor at the local hospital, which also adds some drama. So do the moments when she's treating patients. Granted, the individual 50-minute episodes can get a bit long, but what makes Midnight Family interesting is what it reveals about Mexico City's medical system, and the wide array of of people that it tries to serve.
