Miss Governor
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
MISS GOVERNOR follows Antoinette Dunkerson (Terri J. Vaughn) a local politician in Mississippi who wants to become the state's first Black lieutenant governor. However, she is bringing her off-the-wall family along for the ride, including her mother Cleo (Jo Marie Payton), cousin and ineffective campaign assistant Shamika Latavia Latoya Farrah Dunkerson, children Titus and Lola (Tré Boyd and Drew Olivia Tillman), and Shamika's boyfriend Basil (Dyon Brooks).
Is It Any Good?
This is definitely one of Tyler Perry's better looking productions, but the humor the series relies on bogs down what could be a home run sitcom. Instead of mining comedic situations for the full potential, Miss Governor's writing relies on cheap Black stereotypes, crude humor, and random cursing.
The stereotypical jokes also undercut whatever commentary Miss Governor wanted to make about a Black woman running for Lieutenant Governor in Mississippi. It's a shame, since Vaughn and Payton, two great actresses who captured audiences on The Steve Harvey Morning Show and Family Matters respectively, deserve to star in a new well-written, well-crafted sitcom. In short, they deserve better.
