It's refreshing to see these documentarians strive for a tone of quiet empathy instead of focusing on the potential for drama. From the outset, Mormon No More strives to educate the viewer on the damage that can occur when people are raised in environments where they're discouraged from thinking differently from the group. The poignant story of Harry Fisher, who died by suicide after coming out as gay at his Mormon university, is especially gripping.

But what really sets the show apart is the compassion with which it treats all of its subjects, including the couple's ex-husbands and parents who remain practicing Mormons. These are people clearly struggling with how to reconcile their belief systems with the new lives of women they still very much love and value. Meanwhile the women at the center of the story, Sal especially, are fighting just as hard to protect their families, new and old. As their journeys are documented, stereotypes are quickly peeled away. The result is an utterly eye-opening, yet still relatable, four episodes.
