What's the Story?

1970s Italy is the backdrop for MRS. PLAYMEN, a drama charting the rise of Adelina Tattilo, the woman who rebooted and reinvigorated the country's most popular adult magazine. When her cheating, embezzling husband (Francesco Colella) disappears, leaving an exasperated Tattlio in charge of Playmen, she takes the opportunity to modernize the magazine with daring photoshoots, challenging editorial features, and celebrity content that tantalizes the public and infuriates lawmakers and the church.

Many stories have shown the rise of magazines like Playboy and the battles they fought along the way, but this Italian show takes a different angle. Seeing a female editor in Mrs. Playmen face similar issues in conservative Italy brings a whole new perspective. The show uses the story of an ambitious magazine editor's struggle to be taken seriously and succeed in a male-dominated field to examine big-picture issues such as female liberation, religious conservatism, and political harassment. While not family-friendly fare, it's a unique and well-made choice for grown-ups that's likely to inspire spirited discussion.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the way Mrs. Playmen depicts women's lives in the 1970s. What freedoms did Adelina enjoy as a wealthy woman, compared to someone like Elsa, who's forced to make hard decisions on what to do after her assault to avoid societal shame?

  • Talk about consent, and why it's so important. Mrs. Playmen depicts several situations where a woman doesn't or can't consent to being featured in the magazine, and editors justify their actions in various ways.
