What's the Story?

MURAI IN LOVE is about Murai's (voiced by Brandon Jay) efforts to make his homeroom teacher fall in love with him. When Ms. Tanaka (voiced by Morgan Lauré) tells him she's not interested in guys like him, Murai dyes his hair—and ends up looking like a video game character that Ms. Tanaka is secretly obsessed with!

This cheeky romcom anime would be just fine, if not for the uncomfortable premise of a teacher and student falling in love. Murai in Love does a good job with its teen characters. They look, talk, and act like everyday teens. They're supportive friends, and they work hard to reach their goals. Unfortunately, the adults are not good role models. Ms. Tanaka is especially disappointing because her rejection of Murai is all talk, no action. The story keeps pushing the two together, and the side characters who might initially disapprove eventually support the relationship. This makes it far too easy for young viewers to think that this kind of age gap, status gap relationship is OK instead of inappropriate.
