Racism and sexism

My 4 year old daughter discovered musti recently and really enjoyed it. Most episodes are innocuous. However, I was troubled by how many times the lesson was “boys and girls can both do x” but most of the episode was a character repeatedly asserting that “fairy tales are for girls” and “cars are for boys.” Then, in an episode about the circus, the animal friends put on their own circus. The first act was two of the characters dressed up as Native Americans! I was horrified by this cultural appropriation and we will not be watching this show again.

Is It Any Good?

Simple in every way but dynamic throughout, this Dutch series is everything that's good about preschool programming. It's visually delightful with bold colors and CGI animation that youngsters will love, and its narrated style gives it a read-aloud quality with similar effect. Not only is it pleasant to watch, its stories clock in at five minutes in length, so it's easy to enjoy this one with your youngsters and still keep the screen time to a minimum.

As for what it teaches those who watch, you can't go wrong with the characters' experiences with everything from planting a garden to dealing with a fear of thunderstorms; affirmations about friendship, integrity, and learning something new at every opportunity abound. With plots that are right on par with what preschoolers understand, Musti is an excellent pick for this age group.
