What's the Story?

MY KIND OF COUNTRY is a music competition produced by actor Reese Witherspoon and musician Kacey Musgraves. The judges, or "scouts," are seasoned country musicians from non-traditional backgrounds: Mickey Guyton, Jimmie Allen, and Orville Peck. Each scout has hand-picked four artists from across the globe who showcase their talents. Three will make it through musical workshops hosted by the scouts in Nashville. Contestants and judges alike share their stories of how they came to country music. Performers come from all over the world, e.g., Alisha Pais from Bombay, The Congo Cowboys from South Africa, and Ismay from Petaluma, Calif.

The standard reality show drama is considerably toned down in this lively series; it instead focuses heavily on the music. My Kind of Country's vibe is overwhelmingly positive, not unlike the Great British Bake Off's -- scouts speak glowingly of their diverse recruits, and it's a pleasure to hear each contestant's unique backstory. A love of country music ties everyone together here, so families who appreciate the genre and great musicianship will find a cozy, highly watchable competition in this series.
