What's the Story?
In NIGHT SKY, husband and wife Irene and Franklin York (Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons) share a secret they've been keeping for decades: a hidden chamber that leads to a distant planet. Having reached the point in their lives where they're contemplating their own mortality, Irene and Franklin are on the verge of sharing their secret or giving up the chamber altogether when a mysterious stranger name Jude appears.
Is It Any Good?
This show is an example of how, in the streaming era, a lot of simple premises that could be satisfying movies are getting stretched into TV shows. Night Sky has the lugubrious pace of a show built for binging while multitasking. The upside of Night Sky's 8-episode length, though, is that it showcases two incredible performances by world-class actors Spacek and Simmons.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the secret chamber. Why do Franklin and Irene keep it a secret? What does it mean to their relationship? How do their feelings change over the course of the series?
How do the characters in the show exhibit compassion, resilience, and curiosity?
Is the chamber a metaphor? What meaning could Franklin and Irene's stories have beyond the plot?
