What's the Story?

NIPPON SANGOKU takes place in a post-nuclear war period called the Sangoku Era, after the collapse of Japanese society. Japan has split into three separate nations, and the story focuses more specifically on a husband and wife named Aoteru Misumi (voiced by Alejandro Antonio Ruiz) and Saki Higashimachi (voiced by Ratana). After his wife is murdered, Aoteru decides that he wants to join the military and reunite the country; he becomes quite successful.

This anime has some upsetting displays of grief and violence, which may be tough to watch for sensitive viewers, but the show doesn't rely too heavily on it, and the story is still engaging. The Nippon Sangoku art style is interesting too, with a dark grey-and-white color scheme that really expresses the cold, lonely, and hopeless feeling of the time period and setting. Aoteru, the main character, is likeable, and the viewer hopes for justice for his wife and against the villains.

  • Families can talk about how Aoteru went on to honor Saki's life. Do you think Saki would have been proud of Aoteru?

  • Will Aoteru's knowledge from the books he's read help him in the future as a soldier in the war?
